Each year, one and a half million Americans are diagnosed with cancer. This fact creates what Melissa Bowen, executive director of MyLifeLine.org Cancer Foundation, calls “one degree of separation” between each person and someone impacted by cancer. In other words, every American has had cancer or is close to someone who has. This is where the nonprofit MyLifeLine.org comes in. MyLifeLine.org was founded and launched in May 2007 as a place where cancer patients or their family or friends could establish a free website and communicate via the internet regarding diagnosis, treatment, and support..
MyLifeLine.org is the brainchild of founder Marcia Donziger, herself a cancer survivor. During her own treatment for cancer, Donziger learned firsthand of the need to streamline communications about her condition. Communications with friends and family was its own source of significant stress, hindering the treatment and recovery process. During her treatment, Donziger recalls feeling overwhelmed by the volume of concern, physically unable to return every caring phone call herself, and emotionally drained by the need to repeat the same information about her condition over and over. Donziger also had feelings of guilt about not being able to stay in better touch with those who cared about her.
Seeing the need, Donziger created the solution. MyLifeLine.org is one of the only cancer- specific free site builders in the world. While other organizations provide websites to aid people in communicating with each other about significant life events, including cancer diagnosis, MyLifeLine.org is the only cancer specific organization. As a result, MyLifeLine.org is able to focus not only on connecting cancer patients with family and friends, but it is able to provide cancer-specific resources, education and partners.
