WHERE: Abend Gallery 1412 Wazee St | Denver, ColoradoJC Spock: Looking West Opening Reception: Wednesday, July 17, 6-9 pm. At Sugar Cube, 1555 Blake Street, Denver, CO 80202. On view through September 14, 2019. Abend Gallery and Sugar Cube are proud to present a solo exhibition, “Looking West”, by JC Spock, a mixed media artist, who specializes in nostalgic art with a contemporary edge. Creating art that speaks to a bygone era in a modern way is at the core of JC Spock’s work. She is particularly drawn to the imagery and history of the Midwest/West. Fueled by passion for nature and travel, JC’s mixed media art works tell a unique story through the quiet scenes captured, the vintage ephemera incorporated and the touches of paint; combined together, these produce an effect that is greater than the sum of its parts. Each of Spock’s paintings incorporate multiple layers of acrylic paints, inks, pastels and vintage ephemera (letters, ledgers, postcards and other authentic documents) with photography to create vintage inspired works of art. The artist is inspired by the architecture of old, rusty and abandoned structures and objects, as well as architectural elements in nature. “As an old soul, I'm drawn to old buildings, old documents and old music. I love to scour antique shops for vintage/antique ephemera to incorporate into my backgrounds and I love to photograph old mills, grain elevators, water towers and barns and give them new life in my artwork.” However much JC admires old architecture, natural landscapes, particularly those of the American West, are a major source of inspiration for her. “I love wide open spaces, quiet spaces and peaceful places.” As a former Colorado resident of over ten years, the artist spent a lot of time in the mountains, as well as in the Southwest, as evidenced in her landscape work. “Looking West is my way of connecting to the place that feels most like home; not only speaking literally to looking west towards the mountains, but also figuratively, as I feel like I’m always looking westward from New England, waiting until I can return.” JC Spock has been exhibiting professionally since 2017. In that short period of time, her work has been exhibited in multiple galleries, museums, juried art fairs and curated exhibits across the country. Her art is in the permanent collection at the CFD Old West Museum in Cheyenne, WY, as well as several hospitals across the country, including Mayo Clinic, UC Health, Banner University Medical Center Tucson and Bristol Hospital in Connecticut. 1412 Wazee St | Denver, Colorado 80202 | 303.355.0950 | abendgallery.com Viewing hours: M-F: 7:30 am – 10:00 pm Saturday: 9:00 am – 10:00 pm Sunday: 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
