A shimmering stretch of river—the South Platte—runs through Denver, and for more than 50 years the Greenway Foundation has been the visionary steward ensuring it remains a place of beauty, connection and possibility. Founded in 1974, the organization helped transform a once-polluted waterway into a thriving urban ecosystem  that continues to shape the city’s growth and character.

The river is Denver’s original gathering place,” says executive director Ryan Aids. Our work is about restoring that sense of belonging and wonder for everyone who calls this city home.”

Today, the foundation’s impact is visible in revitalized parks, improved water quality and the thousands of children who experience hands-on environmental education through SPREE (South Platte River Environmental Education), its dedicated environmental and outdoor education branch. SPREE connects Denver-area youth with the South Platte River through hands-on learning, school excursions, day camps and community events.

But nowhere is the Greenway Foundation’s spirit more beautifully expressed than in its signature fundraising events, especially the luminous Gala on the Bridge. Held at the historic Commons Park, once a Native American gathering place and the site of Denver’s 1858 gold discovery, the gala transforms the park into an open-air ballroom, complete with sweeping skyline views, candlelit tables and the soft hum of the river below. It’s one of Denver’s most enchanting traditions—elegant, intimate and unmistakably local. There’s nothing else like it,Aids says. “For one night, the city gathers right above the water we’ve spent decades fighting for.

As the evening winds down, the energy shifts seamlessly into Gala After Dark, a vibrant late-night celebration that draws  a style-forward crowd. With live music, craft cocktails and the glow of the city lights reflecting off the river, it’s become one of Denver’s most coveted tickets—a party with purpose. After Dark brings a new generation into the fold,Aids explains. It’s joyful, it’s modern, and it reminds people that the river is alive—and worth protecting.

Funding the ecosystem restoration helps to redefine the South Platte corridor for generations and fuels the foundation’s mission while showcasing the river as a place of community and creativity. The South Platte tells Denver’s story,Aids reflects. Our job is to make sure that story keeps getting better.
