Known for its picturesque antebellum appeal, incredible cuisine and colorful history, Charleston, S.C., makes for a popular vacation spot. The city’s Colonial-style buildings and cobblestone boulevards evoke the romantic Old South, while its coastal location provides plenty of scenic variety. But it’s the serene Lowcountry that really draws you in.

About 20 miles outside of the city on the banks of the Kiawah River among the Sea Islands sits a stylish luxury retreat unlike any other. The Dunlin, an Auberge Resorts Collection property, feels like stepping into an eternal vacation home—a whimsical haven that invites exploration and offers unparalleled access to nature’s beauty with 100-year-old trees and 20 miles of waterfront, scenic nature trails and abundant marshlands rich in native flora and fauna.

The property itself is situated within the exclusive 2,000-acre waterfront community of Kiawah River. Complete with a preserved estuary, it’s a place that embraces natural wonder and luxurious comfort. Though the resort is a recent addition to the landscape, this land has always been rich in heritage, the kind of place that inspires creativity and reverence for nature.

“Guests are always in awe of the tranquility and the dynamic qualities of the Sea Islands,” says Michael DeCanio, The Dunlin’s general manager. “The peace of the Kiawah River, the unique marshland habitats and Lowcountry heritage make this property unlike any other hospitality experience on the East Coast.”

It’s that connection to nature that truly defines the experience at The Dunlin. It’s not just a place to stay—it’s also a place to immerse yourself in. Guests can embark on adventures into the salt marsh, where the estuary teems with wildlife. One popular excursion is paddling through the tranquil waters at sunrise, surrounded by flights of roseate spoonbills and the watchful gaze of dolphins. Another noteworthy experience is a guided moonrise kayaking adventure, gliding across the water as the moon casts its light over the landscape.

Additionally, the resort’s Gone Fishin’ workshop teaches guests the art of net casting, crabbing and baiting. The agricultural workshops are not to miss, offering a deeper connection to the rich heritage of the region and the Lowcountry’s farming traditions.

As for the charming décor and design of the property, the 72 cottage-style rooms and suites were crafted by acclaimed interior designer Amanda Lindroth, whose work evokes a sense of peace and playful elegance. She curated every part of the hotel, from the guest rooms to the common areas, the spa, and the bar and restaurants. Whitewashed walls, honey oak floors and soft mint-green accents create a space that feels airy and inviting. The interiors are adorned with textural linen fabrics that make each room feel like a restful retreat.

“Time seems to slow down here. The air carries the scent of salt and pine that evokes memories of summertime in the South,” says DeCanio. “Guests often say they feel transported back to their childhood with endless outdoor adventures but with sophisticated elegance and a focus on rest and relaxation.”

The beauty of The Dunlin extends to its spa, Aster, where nature is once again at the forefront. Using locally sourced ingredients like Farmaesthetics’ Midnight Honey Oil, harvested from the property’s own hives, the treatments are designed to rejuvenate and restore. The Healing Honey Body Massage, paired with the Milk & Buds Facial—which incorporates local flowers and essences—leaves you feeling truly connected to the land.

Dining at The Dunlin is another delightful discovery, with Linnette’s, the resort’s signature restaurant, serving comforting coastal cuisine with a touch of sophistication. Chef Michael DeCicco brings the flavors of the Sea Islands to life with dishes like wood-fire roasted oysters with bone marrow butter and pickled peppers, and ember-grilled local shrimp served with sweet corn and dilly bean sauce vierge. Each bite tells a story of the land and sea, a celebration of local ingredients and culinary craft.

Families and pets are also welcome at the resort. Children can enjoy the Dunlin’s many nature-based activities, and dogs are invited to join in the fun (for a small fee). Minnows Camp and toy boat races are also on the agenda for the kids, as well as a visit to a neighboring farm where guests of all ages can collect eggs, feed chickens, milk cows and interact with friendly farm animals. Top off the day with a bonfire, communal seafood feast, or a whole-hog barbecue.

The Dunlin is an homage to the Southern way of life and a reminder of the simple joys found in both quiet moments and grand adventures.
