Grand Lake Lodge Creates Glorious Views Of The Past And Present
Looking for a serene retreat near one of the country’s best- loved national parks? Look no further than Grand Lake Lodge
For more than 100 years, Grand Lake Lodge has reigned as the grand dame of an idyllic slice of the Rocky Mountains. Established in 1920 to serve guests visiting Rocky Mountain National Park, the century-old retreat maintains its historic charm, inviting guests to step back in time while enjoying modern comforts. Perched high above Grand Lake, the lodge offers sweeping views, serene surroundings and a slice of quintessential Colorado—perfect for a weekend away or a longer respite.
ENJOYING LODGE LIFE
A registered National Historic Landmark, Grand Lake Lodge is the manifestation of “Father of Colorado Tourism” Roe Emery’s vision to create a destination lodge in Colorado. Modeled after the lodges near Old Faithful in Yellowstone and Glacier National Park Lodge, Grand Lake Lodge embodies a rustic elegance befitting its location.
With huge beams and a front porch that begs guests to “sit a spell,” the lodge is the full package of rustic comfort. Swings and rocking chairs are situated to encompass the view of Grand Lake and the Rocky Mountains; inside, guests are greeted by the warmth of its iconic stone fireplace. The rich smell of burn- ing wood instantly brings back childhood memories, creating a connection between the lodge’s past and its vibrant present.
Huntington House Tavern, Grand Lake Lodge’s on-site restaurant, is a favorite dining destination for both guests and locals. Pairing spectacular 180-degree views with a menu focusing on innovative takes on comforting favorites, the restaurant serves dishes like crispy sous vide chicken and grilled elk chops. Breakfast selections that include French toast topped with poached peaches and bourbon maple syrup offer indulgent starts to the day.
When it’s time to get some shut-eye, the lodge’s 75 historic cabins, originally purchased from the Sears Roebuck catalog, beckon. Choices include half cabins with king or queen beds, and full cabins with adjoining queen beds. These cozy accommodations were remodeled within the past five years but retain their rustic charm with antique bed frames (with comfy modern mattresses) and small-yet-serviceable bathrooms. Traveling with a four-legged companion? The cabins are pet friendly for an additional fee.
For a unique experience, Grand Lake Lodge also offers four modern lake-view Jupes in addition to the cabins. These spacious canvas tents are outfitted with queen-size Nectar mattresses, solar panels, USB charging stations and dimmable LED lighting. Plus, a cantilevered porch affords breathtaking views. They’re a perfect blend of old and new, offering guests the feeling of glamping with a historic touch.
AROUND THE LAKE
Grand Lake Lodge is more than a place to stay—it’s also a gateway to natural wonder. In addition to its proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park, the lodge is surrounded by hiking trails, lakes and plenty of opportunities for wildlife viewing. Popular activities include kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, boating and fishing in the pristine waters of Grand Lake (and boat rentals are easy and convenient).
For families, a visit to Grand Lake Lodge provides a rare chance to disconnect from screens and reconnect with nature. From exploring the lake and surrounding mountains on bike, foot or horseback to splashing in the pool, enduring memories can be imparted with even a weekend away, creating connections to family and nature that will last for years.
The lodge also offers stunning venues for ceremonies and receptions of all sizes. An outdoor ceremony space provides an unparalleled backdrop of the park and lake. For weddings, couples exchange vows against a panorama of rugged peaks, sparkling water and Colorado skies, creating a magical setting for unforgettable memories.
While the lodge primarily operates as a summer destination, it has recently expanded to accommodate guests during the winter months. Whether it’s for cozy evenings by the fire or snow-filled adventures, the lodge offers a tranquil retreat during every season.
Grand Lake Lodge continues to enchant visitors with its blend of history, natural beauty and modern amenities. It’s a place where the pace slows and the simple pleasures of mountain life take center stage, capturing the Colorado spirit that endures across the centuries.
