Encaustic Wax Art Creates Beautiful Paintings With Stunning 3D Finishes
Apis Opus: Encaustic Invitational on display though June 11, 2023
Encaustic wax is an ancient medium containing beeswax and resin. It can be pigmented with a variety of materials and used to create prints, paintings or 3D finishes. Three of NKollectiv’s member artists use this medium on a regular basis and they invited other local artists to join them for the encaustic exhibition Apis Opus, opening with a public reception at 960 Santa Fe Drive, running through June 11, 2023. Other district-wide events during the exhibition include the Sundays on Santa Fe Art Walk on May 28, 11-3 pm and the First Friday Art Walk on June 2, 5-9 pm.
The exhibition is named for the common genus of the honey bee in North America (Apis). Encaustic painting is a technique that involves applying molten beeswax, usually mixed with resin and pigments, to wood or other surfaces. Multiple layers are often applied. In between each layer heat must be used to fuse the newest layer to those beneath. It is a very tactile process resulting in vivid colors and a luminous surface.
Participating artists include NKollectiv owner, Nicole Korbe and Members: Kelly Austin-Rolo, Michele Messenger along with guest artists Angela Larson, Ashton Lacy Jones, Gigia Kolouch, Kathy Fisher, Lois Lupica, Melody Epperson, Shannon Mello, and Victoria Eubanks.
