For tea enthusiasts and tea farmers, the rise of tea tourism is something to drink to.

A subset of agritourism, tea tourism is a budding industry. These aren’t your average Tripadvisor-style tours: tea tours are intimate and often led by the owners of tea companies who have deep relationships with the tea farmers. They offer once-in-a-lifetime experiences for tea aficionados and tea professionals alike, with tours of stunning and often historic tea farms and in-depth tea education. Participants frequently have the opportunity to meet the tea farmers and participate in a “cupping” (tasting) in their home. Plus, tea tourism is a win-win-win for everyone: farmers are able to meet their biggest fans, and tea tourism brings tourist dollars to the community.

Tea Farmers Picking

This October, Kumaon Tea is hosting its first tea trip to Kumaon, a forgotten tea region in the Himalayas. Guests will experience every step of tea’s journey, from seed to plant, to processing to cup. Guests will tour Kumaon’s brand new specialty tea factory, while learning about cultivation, processing, biochemistry, and more. Proceeds from the experience go towards the tea farmers. Kumaon Tea is partly owned by Young Mountain Tea, which has led six tea expeditions.
